Okay, that’s the formal bit. Now here’s the useful bit…

What is an AGM and why do we have it?

The AGM is a meeting for all members of Marina Allotments. As an association, our constitution states that we must hold an annual general meeting at least every 18 months. In reality we tend to hold them once a year. It’s a good way for the members to get together and check in on the functioning of the allotment – it keeps the committee accountable and engages the members without being too onerous.

What happens at the AGM?

The meeting normally lasts between 30 minutes and an hour and there are some formal things which have to happen at an AGM. At the meeting, the committee present reports about what has happened over the previous year and raise any issues which require discussion or a vote. The committee members for the coming year are elected, usually en bloc (in one vote rather than for individuals). It is also a chance for members to bring up any concerns or ideas which they have for discussion (though this can also happen at any time throughout the year – just email the committee). It is the most democratic, open and fair way to run the allotment.

Why do we need a committee?

Because we are a self managed allotment and our tenancy agreement with Hastings Borough Council (who own the land) states that we must have a management committee. The committee is responsible for keeping the allotment running – to read more about what the committee does, please see this previous post.
