Frequently Asked Questions

Are you interested in learning more about Marina Allotment? Here are some of our frequently asked questions. Take a look at them below, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for please feel free to email us.

How big are the plots?

Full plots are 5 rods which is approximately 125 square metres (about half a tennis court). This is considered big enough to grow food for a family. There are also smaller plots available.

Is it a lot of work?…

The short answer is, yes!

We want as many people as possible to have access to land where they can grow their food cheaply, so almost all plots are now 5 rods or less. We also have quite a few smaller starter plots which are great if you’re new to growing. But even a small plot requires a fairly serious commitment – on average perhaps 5 or 6 hours a week at least. Though less through the winter and more in the spring and summer. In addition to this, as we are a self managed allotment and all members are required to give some time to help manage and maintain the wider allotment. This might be volunteering at a stewardship day a couple of times a year, or helping to run the shop.

Every year people take on an allotment and then find that they are just not able to make the most of it. And since we have a long waiting list, we do check to make sure members are fully cultivating their plots. It is a lot of work, but it is a beautiful place to be working, outdoors, growing your own food, with all the benefits physically and mentally that brings.

How many plots are there?

There are currently 170 plots on the allotment.

Is there a waiting list at the moment?

Yes. There are almost a hundred people on the waiting list. It is currently taking around three years from joining the waiting list to being offered a plot. However, you can still join the allotment as an associate. For more information, please email the committee.

How much is a plot?

The cost per rod is £9.50 per year (£7.40 rent and £2.10 water) plus an association fee of £6 and additional fee of £5 per associate member (family or friends). A full plot with one associate is therefore £58.50 per year.

How do I join the allotment?

Just email join@marinaallotments.org.uk with your full name, address and telephone number. If there are no plots available, you will be put on a waiting list. Alternatively, complete the form on the homepage here.
